.308 to .30-06 adapter
I know the value of these adpaters have been debated a great deal through the years and the consensus is they should not be used in an M1 and would only have limited practicle value in an 03.
This question is more on the techincal side. I have a 03A3 barrel that was taken off a drill rifle. The barrel had a plug in the chamber, but was never torched and ruined. The neck area of the chamber was damage slightly by a drill bit when the plug was removed. The bore is in otherwise great condidtion.
Would the chamber adapter cover the neck area of the chamber and make this a useable sporter barrel? I hate to see it waisted otherwise.

its scrap,, do yourself a favor..unless you make into a .300 mag, or other larger cal.
dont be tempted to re use the barrel.
if you look at the dems of a .308 Win. compared to a 30-06. youll see the .308 is a fatter case, then the 30-06..
try this.
remove the striker assembly from your bolt. try without force to chamber a .308 in your 03.
sure if you force it it will go, but not without force.
A3, barrels arent that hard to find. {yet}, i vote...cut it up, trash it..or use it as a jack handle..

Or, if the bore is nice, you can use it as a blank. I've made 30/40 Krag carbine barrel replacements and liners for 30 X 32/20's and 32 HRM conversions. Ric

The .308 is larger in diameter at the shoulder than the .30-'06 at the same point, so it can be forced into a bolt rifle only with difficulty. (In an M1, the strong op rod spring does the job, but extraction without firing is hard.)
The adapter fills the gap at the shoulder area; it does not extend into the .30 chamber neck or leade.
The barrel may be OK for use with the .30, though the cases might not be reloadable.
General note: Installing one of those adapaters correctly involves roughing the front of the chamer, installing the adapter with epoxy, then reaming with a .308 reamer. The result is a permanent job so, no matter what the ads say, you won't have a rifle which can use either round just by installing the adapter.

Thanks folks,
Before I put an adapter in it, I shoot it with .30 to see how much it affects the casings. If too much, I may go for the adapter. I have a .308 reamer, so making the .308 rounds chamber easily probably will not be an issue.
I definately won't be "scrapping" the barrel. Also with all the torched A3 barrels I have on hand, jack handles are plenty.
