I will build my own M1 Carbine in the following months (money need to flow...as I am also rebuilding my house). I have a barrel I bought on Gunbroker last year https://www.milsurps.com/images/imported/deleted.gif
I know that it is an odd shaped barrel but for the price....it will be a good shooter on the pistol range ! I am planning to put it in an Underwood receiver and a M1A1 stock. Let's the fun begin !
Here's a picture of a carbine I built a year or so back. Used a Springfield, Inc., receiver and a unused Winchester barrel that I'd had for years. Stock was a new unfinished commercial stock that I finished, and all the rest was USGI parts I hand picked at gunshows. Certainly not the cheapest way to acquire a carbine but definitely the most fun.

How long is this barrel and is the flash hider removable?

Nice Carbine ! I will probably do like you as M1 Carbine are now selling for 500€ here in Belgium & picking up USGI parts at militaria shows aren't more expensive.
My barrel is exactly 16" long and the flashider was screwed & silver soldered in place. For me, it's a L1 flash hider....I must check.
Where did you find the stock pouch? It looks like a really good idea to have 2 extra mags close at hand.:thup:
There are lots of pouches left at reasonable prices but you have to figure out the authentic pouches from all the repro pouches. (They were never intended to be mounted on the stock, but GI's figured out they worked there)
The snap inside the pouch will scratch your stock if you don't cover it with duct tape or some other means.
If you can go through several gun shows you should be able to find one, but many are reproductions. There's usually several listed on eBay at any given time, but you need to know what you are looking for. Many are repros there too.

I'd want to get some feedback on that barrel before I invested anything more in the project. It looks suspiciously like the demilled barrels that Fulton Armory is offering (@ $25 each), but someone has reworked some of them & added the flash hider to meet US legal length requirements. My question is, were these barrels demilled to allow easy disposition, or was there some defect?
I have seen these barrels being sold before on Gunbroker and believe them to be demilled barrels that had the "flash hider" welded on to make them legal length. Makes for a less than ideal M1 carbine, but an adequate plinker for those who want something neat looking to go bang with. To each there own.
