not too far off topic...mini 14

heavy barrel, an old 1x weaver mounted low and a lee enfield cheek piece. about a 2.0 moa shooter with milsurp 223. also, ordered a couple of 5 round mags for it. i stripped and redid the stock and wood handguard with just BLO. stuck the rubber thing on the end to increase length of pull a bit....shoots 100 and 200 yard offhand pretty good.

Nice looking rifle, I like the pad to get your eye up to the level of scope. 2 MOA is better than I could shoot when I had a Mini 14, but every rifle is different. Have fun with it.

Here's my Mini-14 in a Tapco stock, with Millett Redot Multidot SP (3,5,8,10 MOA dots, with variable intensity). Does really well with Olympic SS109 - but after I realized what those things are worth today, put them in "ready reserve" and bought some Bernaul Brown Bear 62-gr BTHP - just got them yesterday, so I'll be going to the range for some "research" this w/e. If they pan out, think I'll try some of the Silver Bear .223....

That "M-14-style" "recoil reducer"/bayonet lug were added years ago and there isn't a bayonet made that fits it!:dunno: but it looks "bad"... Still need to get that sling to a leather shop to get it dyed black.

"'66-'91" - hmmm, that's about 25 years? Beats my 24! In those 24 years, never was closely associated with Marines (they guarded the front door of the buildings I worked in) and in Augsburg, GE, we had our "token Marine" Major who was technically assigned to our command, but only for accounting purposes - he was there to attend the Univ. of Augsburg (he was a Harrier driver and loved it!). Just to keep it on topic:wave:, in Iceland I was assigned as Weapons Officer (12 M1's and 3 .45's!). Decided I should learn how to field-strip an M1. Took one out to the Corporal on our front door...well, says he, it is similar to an M-14, like they were issued. Anyway, we managed to get it all stripped down - had it spread out all over the counter at his window, and up comes the Sgt of the guard! He like to had a cow until we got him calmed down and explained that the rifle was one of "my" M1"s and not the corporals M-14! He relented then, helped us reassemble it properly, and said "Don't do it again!".:slap:

appx how much does your Tapco stock weigh--transfering the missis from carbine to mini and looking for weight reduction,,she is a shooter-previous

Well....can't say what the stock weighs but the entire rig is 7lbs12ozs (with the Redot). I would say it is not particularly light - it is made with military grade components - very solid and durable. The carbine weighs in at 5lbs5ozs. Recoil on the Mini is about on a par with the carbine (bearing in mind that, with the carbine, I'm shooting the Aguila .30 ammo from DCM, said to be a lighter loading than regulation and with the Mini, I WAS shooting Olympic SS109).

If you're looking for significant weight reduction - try the Muzzlelite stock! It weighs about 2lbs, with the accessory rail installed. But - be forewarned - the trigger pull is atrocious due to the transfer bars, even after smoothing them their entire length and drowning in Lubriplate). But, it does look BAD and never fails to get the "What the hell is that?!" (Think "Starship Troopers"). Goes to the shoulder comfortably and fits my short arms as well. 40-rd mags can be problematic, fitting VERY close to the lower rear corner of the pistol grip. (If you'd like to try it just for grins, I'd be happy to send it to you for a trial run:thup:! P.S. NOT for southpaws!!!:surrender:

I few years ago I executed a design exercise and built what I called a M214 rifle (214) it being smaller than the M-1A(M-14). It was chambered in the .308X 1 1/2 Barnes which is now marketed as the .30 Remington AR. The M-214 is on the bottom. Full size M-1A on top.
