Buying A Firearm Delayed
Have a friend that everytime she goes to buy a firearm. When they call to do the check at ATF she is held up a day or two. It does come back ok but it is always delayed. Is there some place she can call to find out what is up? Never been in any trouble.

Current or ex-military? Current or ex-security clearance? Our local dealers who sell to sailors and military contractors with clearances all the time say these factors often contribute to a 10-24 hour hold.

delay
sometimes it is their name is similar or a different middle initial.

Cant see clearance making a difference, never had a delay myself and retired with a TS/SCI.
Does she put in her SSAN? I always make sure I do that even though I cant imagine there being another wilson out there LOL.
It could also be a state thing, many states do all or part of the instant checks and don't go straight to the FBI at all (Florida only checks with FLDLE and forwards whatever they need to the feds at a later date).

Some people in MD have had the same problem with the State Police check.* One guy had his attorney write them a letter stating that Mr. X, SSAN Y, address Z had no record and was a good guy. He had no further problems.
I also have held high security clearances and never had a problem. The usual reason is that the name and/or SSAN are close to some one else who has a record. There is supposed to be a process to correct the problem, but I have been told it doesn't always work.
Now some in Congress want the so-called "watch list" checked as well as criminal records. OK, except that that list has so many errors and is so full of holes that thousands of people totally unconnected with any threat have been detained at airports. It is a good thing the prez has AF One. Else, I can hear the FSA guy now saying, "Yeah, you say you're Mr. Obama, but you can't fool us by shaving the beard and changing one letter of your name..."
*MD has a police check law for regulated firearm purchases; I know it is a duplication of effort, and efforts have been made to eliminate the state check, but there is no way the staties are going to give up any of their power. They do, however, also run the NCIS check, so it is not a total waste of time.
