I suspect that the present shortage is caused not by the few people who bought thousands of rounds, but rather by the many who bought a reasonable supply. If enough people do that, the result is the same.
In my case, I bought 1000 of each type of primer which I regularly use, and along with the few thousand I already had, consider myself well stocked for the next couple years.
I don't shoot a lot, but I reload for about 20 different calibers, so need the wide selection.
The only primers I see in the Salt Lake area are shotgun and MAYBE large pistol. I'm trying to get my son through his first highpower season and let me tell you, when I drop a small rifle primer, I get down on my hands and knees to find it and not just for safety. We started the season with a 1K box and it ain't gonna make it! :dunno:
I ran out of small rifle primers and refuse to pay double+ what I consider to be a normal rate per 1000.
In the 7.62x39 I just loaded 20 rounds of "substitute" loads containing 2400 and small magnum pistol primers. The Mauser action I use should have enough FP protrusion to allow the shorter primers to ignite. If I have no signs of primer setback or piercing then I might load some more.
Meanwhile I'm working up a trade with another shooter for primers and powder to get us through this lean time for a while.
I "hoarded" military surplus ammo over the years because it was dirt cheap. I've refused to participate in the insanity of the past half year. My intention was to be able to continue shooting long into the future for little expense and I'm doing just that. I don't worry about "end of the world" stuff because there is nothing I can do about it if it comes to pass. Carl
This guy had $100,000 of Ammo in a storage shed catch fire. In the news that night, he told the camera that his hobby had gotten out of hand...:runaway: He had 200 pounds of black powder and 308 or 30-'06 in cases and linked. In the video he said he had a lot of .22... opps:slap:

Replace all those plastic toy cap guns with krags, trapdoors, and Garands, and you'd have a picture of my safe. I dont have anywhere near that much ammo though, I dont have plans to miss as much I guess.:DQuote:

The same thing happened in 1994, just before the Hi Cap Magazine ban went into effect. I remember M14 and 30 Round M16 Mags selling at gun shows for $60.00 each.
About a year later, after the ban took effect, when most people realized it was an anti gun rights obstacle, but not the end of the world, you had to literally "give away" magazines because there was no more demand. Within a few years dealers were faking "US GI" markings on supposedly US GI magazines and importing them into the country, fooling ATF and Border Patrol, bring prices down even further.
After things level out, you will have to "give away" the ammunition that is selling for big money now.
I shoot alot so a case of primers goes pretty fast. I load for 25 different calibers and shooting two or three times a week uses quite a bit of ammo.
