Just re-looked at the pictures of that really beautiful rifle and just noticed they squished the hell out of the left receiver rail putting the property stamps on it. They made sure they were good and readable LOL

I'm glad you mentioned that. It is the only P14/17 I own so I have nothing to compare it to, but have always wondered about that little bulge. Never thought about it being caused by the GR stamp, but that makes sense.Quote:

You might want to ask Peter Laidler about the "Z" stamp, over on the Lee Enfield forum. A lot of the early ERA P14 rifles were condemned by the British inspectors and marked as "EY" or "Emergency Use Only"
They are sometimes seen with the rear long range sight aperture, whereas yours has been ground off, during the overhaul of these rifles as Weedon in 1940/41. These rifles were not sent through the Weedon overhaul apparently due to their EY status. I saw a prisitne one in the 60,000 range last year, complete with long range sights.
The long range sight pointer was also removed at Weedon. This was done to match the SMLE which had had those parts removed by that time. There was nothing wrong with the long range sights as such, and they probably would have been very useful at times, but in the 1930s there was a fixation on automatic weapons and a discounting of rifle fire, based on an erroneous 'learning of lessons' from WWI (IMO!)

I'm new on here and hope to learn a lot about milsurps. I have a number of them, including a M17 and picked up a P14 this past weekend. It's an early one made by ERA. The stock doesn't have finger grooves, but has a "palm swell" just in front of the magazine and the front base for the volley sight. It's all matching E except the sight slide which has a R. It is star stamped and along with the star, it has a 2, ERA and the serial nr on the receiver ring. It has a beautiful five groove left hand twist bore, but no markings on the barrel behind the front sight. Is this a rebarrel? Hopefully someone can tell me more about these rifles.

Pull the hand guard and check for a serial number on the barrel. It should match the receiver if it's original.
