Hi Bill - The only "INLAND DIV" marking is on the forward barrel above the date stamp. The rear of the receiver is blank as is the forward receiver ring.
I guess it would be odd for a pilot to have a carbine. The part of the story that always intrigued me was that pilot brought home the carbine and a couple of cases of ammo including a bunch of tracers, which the men of the family fired off, much to the delight of all. That was before I was born and I always regretted missing out.
An Inland Barrel does not make it an Inland Carbine. I'll bet you have a commercially made carbine with and Inland barrel and other USGI parts. That pretty much dispels the "bring back" and "Lunchbox" theories.
I’m curious as to how you determined it was an Inland carbine in the first place. While it is relatively easy to tell the differences between carbine manufacturers by the features of the receiver itself Reisch’s book doesn’t have any of the necessary info one would need to make the determination.

You should be able to clear this up and determine what you have if you're still able to post photos this Sunday.
Please try to get close-up photos of all the details you are able to; especially the receiver.

I checked the underside of one of my Plainfield and one of my USGI receivers for any numbers on the front lug that retains the trigger housing. The Plainfield had a "1" but the USGI had no markings. Your receiver had a "2" on the front retaining lug. Anybody else want to check their USGI or commercial receiver front lugs for markings? I didn't feel like pulling all of mine apart to check.

It is an Inland receiver, somewhere in the 30,000 - 55,000 SN range but as you suspect the front and rear have been ground removing the roll stamps. Whoever did it did a good job.
Possible sanitized 'black ops' gun since he was a pilot, perhaps involved in secret missions?
