Harlan Glenn used to have a website, but I can't find it anymore! I heard that the japs during the war used the crater for a garbage pit when digging all the tunnels. One of my unreachable dreams is to have unlimited access to the island for historic documentation. I believe that Iwo is the most untouched battleground in the world! There are thousands of missing japs on that island. Where are they??.
Az Phil, will you give us some deail on the pics. Thanks
Okinawa had a group called the "Tunnel Rats" amazing things the used to find. They used to have a rusted remains of a Garand at the USO on Kadena.
In our Sunday newspapers here in the UK was a report that the Japanese were in the process of uncovering two 'enemy combatant cemeteries' that were used by the US Marines to 'deposit' remains from Mt Suribachi and elsewhere. They've uncovered 51 sets of remains so far but many thousand remain unrecovered (I'll bet.....)
Can anyone shed any light on this or where further info might be found. I thought that it remained sacred ground
Yea sir I sure can. The first pic you can see Mt Suribachi in the back ground the next 2 pic's are of some of the cave's they went into, in the first you can see what looks like empty flamethrower canisters, the next, look like personel items bottles, plates, box's, the last is what is left of a ship rotting in the salt water .
All,
Thanks for posting the pics. I also have wondered about the "tunnels" but never have heard about tours, or excavations or any interest at all, on what they may contain.
Obviously graveyards are touchy things, and that is hallowed ground there... many fell... enemy and friend.
Incredible history there....
