The A could just stand for what bin the carbine was stored in. Not much information about the painted rack numbers being found.
here's a interesting link to a OI Inland stock that came with a label taped under the forearm.

Since the marking is not USGI, why should it not be removed? The '28' and the other possible mark under the paint are not USGI either, but at least they're not blazing yellow and red. I would take the paint off with 'Citri-Strip' right away.

The paint and other markings are part of history and are significant to some of us.
Besides , this kind of shared detective work is fun. Some former USGI guns have returned to the US with various Allied parts , markings , and even tags that ID'ed the the individual soldier or LEO who used the weapon and his/her zero for the sights .
Yep, my scarlet A is, I'm somewhat saddened to say, gone, removed by JASCO a few weeks ago. After cleaning up the wood, I've found a 3" long CRACK clear through the belly of the stock going forward from the magazine well. It seems that this M1 stock can be easily repaired using a pin so I'm good with that.
I've got an M2 stock with exactly the same crack (must be design flaw here hmmm). Unfortunately, unlike M1, this stock has no internal cross member to contain a pin. Any suggestions for creating a lasting repair for this kind of damage to this area?
Since the belly of the m2 stock is thicker, you can still use a threaded pin. You just need to be careful when you you drill the hole.
Thanks jim. It doesn't look THAT much thicker but ... using my calipers and an empty 300 MAG fired case to aid measurement, I measure
3.1" (case inserted) - 2.617" (isolated case) = .483" (belly thickness)
so I guess you're right! thanks for getting me off my arse and breaking the bubble. So another #8 screw then should be good. Might use a #6 (just to be sure :D)

This stock passed through my hands about a year ago. I posted pics at the time, maybe on the old CSP. Someone replied, said they spoke Korean, and that all the markings were Korean. They said the paint behind the recoil plate position indicated someones name. Posting again as both stocks have the yellow and white on the base of the grip. Might be a clue for someone !. The stock is well gone now so I can't answer any questions about it. Cheers, Mike.
