Once you do a few, you get the idea, and it gets easier to appraise and also do the repair!

P.S. I forgot to mention that when I do mine, I put my stock in a vertical Mill. Go slow, and you can get extremely accurate cuts. I don't trust myself with a knife or woodsaw! :)
Sir, I appreciate the kind words. Especially from someone who works on quality firearms. I do wish I had the equipment to make accurate cuts and such, but I'm just an old NC country boy and the only tools I could find for this project were these:Quote:

Hey, whatever gets you through the projects. I have used all manner of files and tools trying to get a good combination.
When I was making a stock (did this with two 1871 Beaumonts) I resorted to rasps and bastard files.
I think you have a talent! You should look for additional beat up stocks, and practice your craft. I at least find it enjoyable!
One mistake that I have made, is the over sanding! :( And I don't mean cartouche removing. While everything looked good, after applying Tung Oil or Linseed Oil, the stock was to slick and smooth! I don't think that arsenals resorted to 1000grit sandpaper! :)
Last picture on this project....this is all I can do and I still cannot make the repair "disappear" completely. That corner on the bottom left is going to be there and that's that.

Thanks again for all the kind words, folks. I'm sure lots of others have done better. As I said in the beginnig, the stock has lots of character and wanted to use it for this 1903A3 project instead of replacing it.
Bottom line: It's good enough for who's it's for....:D

I mostly repair M1 Carbine stocks. I would say you did an excellent job!
