No, I am not saying they have to look almost brand new to be collectible. Some can just be harder to find makers, and you take what condition you find, if or until, you can update it.

Folks reasoning for collecting can vary. If someone is collecting just to have one of each (whatever kind of knife or bayonet) then condition may not be important to that person. If someone is collecting as an investment. And down the road you may intend to sell them instead of willing them to someone. Condition then is a very large factor.

Just because someone pays $50 for a knife and another pays $125, doesn't necessarily mean the $125 knife is in better condition or worth more. I know when I started out I was paying more then something was worth. Sometimes from impluse buying, sometimes it was inexperience. Sometimes from wanting something from my past.

Bottom line is we all collect for our own personal reasons. If we are happy with our own collections, that is what counts.

thats a well put explanation of what was rattling around in my head ,

some collect quality , some representative examples , some every version of a specific one they can lay their hands on ,

some just want a pointy bit for the end of their rifle that looks correct ,

in the end - refer back to that last sentance in the post above :)

All are collectable to someone. Just like old cars or anything else the better the condition the more valuable something is. Just depends on what you are looking for and what you want. Are you collecting or investing? I just recently started collecting and have bought several blades but by far my most valuable one is a K84/98 that I know was brought home by my uncle and he gave it to me when I was 16yo. I looked on the CMP and plan to watch them a while and see if the prices do come down. They have a ton, well actually several tons, of them and I doubt they will sell out anytime soon.

I just got my order from CMP yesterday. A 1906 SA cut down, 1918 RIA cut down, a U C and UFH .the last two look almost band new . I spent 2 hrs cleaning them up as it was a beautiful day here in florida ( I like it when it rains at 70degrees) and the garage door up.
The scabbards are two with flaming bomb and two marked US M 7 with that H with line and tree thing on top like the one pictured in top post. If any interest I'll post a pic. the fl-bombs have a metal tip(painted green ) riveted on the end ,I've never seen this before.

The scabbards with the metal tip are Italian I think.
