Thought you might like to see some examples of the stock finish application that I was referring to. I've done several since these that in my opinion are better, but these are the latest ones I have photos of.
The Model '03 stock is an old stock that I refinished. I used the same stain/BLO process I referred to. The difference is in the sanding and preparation. Since it was an old stock it needed much more sanding/steaming/repairing than a new CMP stock would.
The Model 1917 is wearing a new stock that was finished exactly the way I described in my earlier post and is the type finish you can expect from your new Garand stock if you finish it as described.
Again, there are many ways to achieve the same thing. This works for me.

Zippymbr, at least the CMP now has it in the SG description that you may get a commercial birch stock. Just a few years ago, unless you read their forum closely, it would come as a surprise, a nasty one, if you were expecting real USGI wood. When I first got one it was a rude shock. Fortunately that one was so poorly fitted that when I removed the TG it pulled two large chunks out of the stock. The CMP replaced the stock with a correct one for the H&R rifle that it came on. Nice!!
Great write up, daveboy!
Daveboy, Excellent Post!!
Zippymbr, Believe it or not, there are some on the CMP board that actually request the CMP stocks. I flipped a New CMP stock & metal that came on a SG for a nice SA Postwar stock.
May I simply ask why as I have two new(CMP) stocks that I would trade for post war SA or HRA stocks? I know the CMP's are tighter and may shoot better but that''s all I can come up with for a reason.
There is a want ad on the CMP forum for a CMP stock set. Lock up and preserving the USGI wood are the only reasons I can think of. Ive never recieved a straight trade for a CMP stock, but it got me alot closer to a Nice HRA stock set. I like to shoot mine and Im not a fan of the CMP cartouche.
DR342, thanks it did sound a little to good to be totally true. I know the stocks can be purchased at cmp separately but I want walnut not birch so I look elsewhere. James River manufacturing has what looks to be a very good exact replica stock set with or without cartouche, I ordered one for my WRA and will see how it looks soon.
I got a new CMP stock on my 5.6 HRA from the CMP. Wehn I got it home I took off the stock and steel wooled it down and used the Formby's Tung oil finish. Put on a heavy coat and let it sit for 24 hours. Steel wool again and another coat. I did this for a week to get a good finish. Notice I didn't say shiney finish. Every couple months I add another coat. Fine steel wool and a light coat. I'm happy. It's not a brunette or redhead but a nice honey blond.
TDH, the one in my picture is done some what the same(same oil ) and steel wool about 5 coats, but the tiger stripe makes it look weird and the other one pictured was stained first (X2) but did not have stripes. I now use blo/turp 50/50 and hopefully in time they will darken.
