Krinko brings up a good point as I had not considered Turkish service as an explanation.
Having the privilege of collecting and caring for a number of Turkish Mausers, I can honestly say that they did any and all they could to keep their rifles serviceable. This includes a number of mis-matched parts but the rifles work just fine almost a century later. God knows if they didn't swap parts, these rifles would have been worked right into the ground.
