Looks like the mum was struck with chisel, but still a good buy.
You have an excellent rifle at a reasonable price. I have taken the poly off two rifles and ended up with no finish. If I were you I would leave it alone. You may can tell if it has had poly applied by taking the top handguard off. If the color on the top edge of the stock is a diffent look it may have. I've had a good bit of experience with re-finishing stock but have not learned how to remove poly without taking the finish under it off. Again a very nice rifle.
I think the restorers at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam know how to do that. No secrets are revealed on-line, but on their website I found an example of a restored japanese lacquer cabinet that had been varnished (varnish not specified). The accompanying text says it took them months to get it off, gradually loosening up the modern varnish without spoiling the urushi! Worth a phone call, maybe?

Thanks guys! Don't worry, I haven't touched this one at all. I figure I'll just leave it like I found it rather than cause problems, ha!
It does kinda look like that in the picture, but believe me it's not! That's the glare or something messing with the photo I think.
