As a matter of interest, can you have deactivated firearms of any sort in Oz now? Or is it just Qld?
Not sure of the other states but presently in Queensland a deactivated catagory B firearm is not required to be registered on a firearms licence.
For the record, the DP'd rifle pictured in my post earlier in this thread is registered as a firearm. To be classed as a deactivated firearm and removed from my licence it would have to meet the requirements in the Queensland weapons act and certified as such.

Firearms in Australia are controlled under State legislation. The Federal Howard Goverment buyback saw a national tightening of firearms control but there still are differences in legislation and regulations between the 7 States and 2 Territories. The handling of de-acts does vary state to state.
In WA is is very difficult to hold a Licence for any modern semi auto rifle, especially if it is of military origin. Being a de-act does not change this.

Ok Beerhunter, that's the basis of my misunderstanding. I was thinking that 'Drill Purpose' (DP) was for 'Rifle Drill' which was only done on the parade ground. When we were learning to operate the rifle, that was listed as 'Weapon Training' and was always done with live rifles.
Being ex Raeme, I can't honestly say but I do remember a few big parades for VIPs where the firearms suddenly appeared in pristine, polished condition, complete with chrome bayonets, and after the parade, disappeared just as quick.
The reference for DP's in Oz was EMEI WPN Y 017-1, but on retirement I did'nt think I would need a reference to this. Maybe SON or someone still active may be able to come in on this one.
We're getting technical now Son and Muffer....... I always remember the EMEI's as SA&MG for Small Arms and Machine Guns, the same as the pom EMER's. Am I wrong or did the EMEI's change to EMEI weapons from SA&MG?
I still have EMEI's for our old Owens and they are SA&MG!
We did have 12 wooden gripped L1A1 bayonets in 8 RAR that came out for VIP's. RSM Lee told me that I had to make and fit the grips along the lines of No5 grips. But No5 grips wouldn't fit because the holes wouldn't align and the hilt was tooooooo hard to drill! Anyway, these immaculate off-charge bayonets lived in his drawer!
