They had their swords as a sign of authority after the defeat and eventually would hand them over. Commanders first. My point was that this pattern of sword isn't seen much. Usually it was a Katana, not this one.

if it was a family sword handing it over would hve been dishonor and they then would go off a kill them selfs for it. officers carryed the set most of the time the tanto,wakizashi,and the katana the sword in the pic is a common soldiers swordQuote:
