Yes, fair enough, I felt that was enough detail for this thread though.

So I've been reading that a significant number of Savage No.4s, most of which have zero ties to India, have the FR stamp on the stock. (I guess Long Branch's are also commonly found with this mark, again with no ties to India) So this is indeed a mystery.

FYI: Required import markings in the USA including the importer's company name, abbreviated address, country of manufacture and caliber all came into effect after the Gun Control Act of 1968, not 1986.

Oh I got mixed up on that then. That certainly makes this interesting then because there's no sign of an import stamp, yet it has the proofs on the barrel for when the rifle was sold out of service
