Yep, you are correct but it could be made correct very easily and even if it stays 30-06 what is wrong with making it as complete of a rifle as possible? We can only guess as to when and where the conversion was done and I put all my rifles back to as close to complete as possible. Who knows, maybe there was a cottage industry in Japan cranking out 06 Type 99s for occupying forces to take home. We'll never know for sure.
MT, Before you replace the barrel , check to see if the feed rails have been modified (opened up). If they have been modified it probably wouldn't be good to try to rebarrel back to 7.7. It wouldn't feed correctly and there is no practical way to repair the rails. Salt Flat

I think your friend's rifle had something done to the trigger for it fire and the locking lugs slipping. Normally, these rifle will not fire unless the bolt handle is in full closed position. There is a lever on the trigger that prevents firing if the bolt is not in closed. Good thing is your friend's head wasn't behind the bolt.Quote:

oh and btw , they have that gas relief hole in top of chamber for a reason , another reason why its almost impossible to blow up an early type 99, most all the extra presuure gets spit out by going through that hole, i notice on my hotter loaded rounds i have a small puff out that gas hole at times. I think she will be fine , still best if you have not fired it yet to get it checked, just not worth the risk.
Magazine feeding is always an problem unless the bullets are deep seated. As a single shot no sweat. My friend has one and he shoots 0.312-06 in it. We were hitting silhouette turkeys at 375 Meters with deep seated 150s without any issues
