CMP Garand Barreled receivers

This group of barreled recivers is a real crap shoot if you are ordering. The $100-$125 recivers are not likely to be very good. I've been to the South store right after the rack was restocked. (first one in store on Jan 7) Out of about 60 rack grade that had just put out, I found 3 good enough to take home and one of them is questionable. Was to the North store just last Wednesday the had 3 racks of rack grade BRs they were all rough; Recivers were badly pitted, many above the wood line. some guaged well but the bores were very rusty so I doubt those readings were accurate.
By far the best ones I've seen were the service grade BRs at the South store. All loked like they would clean up easly, and make nice rifles.
I hope they are selling the "better"rack grade BRs by mail order and good luck to those who have ordered them.
After seeing what I've seen. I'd Order a service grade if I needed one but would only order the rack grade if I felt lucky and could afford to throw the $100 away.

I picked out a couple at the North Store a few months ago. There were a bunch there but very few good ones. Most of them (even a week ago) had very worn markings (serial numbers) I would not buy one sight un-seen.

Hmm...that's not very encouraging.

I've got three on order.

I got my first three CORRECT BRs on December 4th...and ordered three more on Decmber 7th! The first three are gorgeous...all three Post-Wars! Absolutely no rust or pitting anywhere on the three...two of the three have great parkerizing, and the third is Greek Black...two of the three have fantastic barrels, and the Greek Black is really nice (except it has a MW of 3 and a TE of 10 w/ a very good crown), so I'll have to see how it shoots before making a decision re replacement. Anyway, I couldn't be happier with what my first $400.00 got me...so now I'll just have to see what I'm gonna get for the second time around!

I was @ the N. Store on 2/13. I was lucky to get one that had a TE & MW of a 3. Very minor rust and it cleaned up well. Have the parts to rebuild her, so I actually started the stock restoration today. Will post pics when done.

Here are 5 I picked out at the south store back in December. One WRA barrel te 2 mw 1.5, 3 of the barrels cleaned up ok and only one will get tossed. I went through a lot of BR's to find these.

Heres a build I did with a handpicked CMP BR. 1945 reciever and correct barrel, MW 1 TW 3 , no rust or pitting anywhere. It was a real steal for $125.00 .Good canidate for a restoration but for now shes a mutt.

I have 2 br that just went open from my 12-3-08 order yesterday.
Yes, I have the already have the parts. I don't care about the barrels, planning on getting new ones put on.

I received two non-correct Brs over two weeks ago. The first was a Nov. 43 and the second is a 5.9 mil. Both receivers look just fine, no rust. The barrels both gauged over 9 on TE and 3 on ME. I assembled the Nov. 43' with the parts that I had saved over the years and took it to the range. As expected, the groups were large but the rifle functioned just fine. Time to find a replacement barrel. Still a pretty good deal for a receiver and a great learning opportunity.
