First shots today, I'm happy. First target I was sighting, I got three distinct groups. #1 too low, #2 too high and #3 right on the money. I was shooting my M2 ball equivalent using plan jane 150g Hornaday FMJ/BT with IMR4895 @ 100yds.
Second target I'm shooting 168g Hornaday match HPBT.
As for tip pressure... Looks to me like it's just fine the way it is so perhaps intended. For 103yr old rifle I can't ask for more.
One thing I did notice is it was hard for me to see the post clearly which is odd because I have 20/15 vision. Suppose I have to find the sweet spot for my cheek weld...dunno?

warpig: Nice shooting. Your results are better than mine after quite a bit of fiddling to get decent forend tip pressure so it looks like you don't need to touch a thing. Had mine out to a friendly battle rifle shoot last weekend and was scoring well at 440 yards though at that distance I didn't appreciate how the front sight protectors fill up so much of the view. I may move my Parker-Hale sight from a P14 to this rifle and see what it's like though, of course, the range calibrations won't mean anything.

You are very lucky. This is one rifle where you should not "pull up the plant to see how the roots are growing". Do not mess with the bedding, upward pressure etc etc.
5 shots is inadequate to be quite sure, but looking at the 2nd target, it seems that the 168gns might actually be a touch better for grouping - if we may assume that the one low shot had a bit of "unrecoverable user error". Give it another try with 8 shots of each load. Measure the total group in each case. Then (allowing for a possible user error), strike out the worst shot in each case, and measure the group size again. If a load scores better on both measurements, then that is the better one.
Lucky Indeed! Load development will come later after rifle league season. The 168g loads were in fact for my 03A3, needed the rest for the match, but I know a good starting point..:super:
