I would guess a British contract Thompson with that sling attached to the left side of the vertical grip

I wonder if some of these (on both sides) ended up as bring-backs?

Absolutely true. You see pics and hear stories, but those of us that have been out know we wouldn't be too interested in drawing our own fire. And that's what would happen.
