Thanks brnom2.
Actually another member has contacted me with also similar good news - if he finds the parts I'll be good to go.
You know, with folks like you guys, always ready to help out another milsurp fanatic, it certainly helps keeping the military heritage alive.
Since I've discovered the world of milsurps, probably a decade ago by now, I've refurbed dozens of Lee Enfields, and fixed a bunch of other milsurp-related rifles. I've also shared this passion with many other folks, including young ones. Without help from so many members (going back to Culver's shooting page - remember that?) I certainly wouldn't have embarked on such a fascinating journey.
Thanks again everyone.

Hi Lou,
Nice commercial Enfield. Gloss type finish is most likely correct and have seen on several target rifles. I would not strip the finish until I posted a few pictures or showed the rifle to somebody that's knowledgeable in this area.
You're asking for the wrong parts for your 5A sight. You have the early version and all that is missing is a pointer plate (like the Lyman 48 sights) and the screw. You can make a plate from sheetmetal...I've done a few. Do you have the mounting hardware. There's a chap in the USA that sells these around the $35.00 mark.

Thanks again everyone. So now I'm wondering exactly what part and screw I need. The sight here isn't exactly like the one pictured by muffet.2008. Here's a better pic of the one I have:

Hi Lou,
Thanks for posting a picture of your sight. It's a 2nd generation 5A. Go to http://www.helstongunsmiths.com and click on "target sights" to view the sight you need info on. They have a 5A modified sight that shows the parts you need. Yours required the small windage indicator plate and screw.

Lou, I would not strip the wood myself. It's hard to tell what some of these old finishes are and as a range rifle a bit of "customization" is to be expected.

Ooops - sorry louthepou, rgg7 is totally correct, you need pointer plate and screw - I failed to look at the pic properly and assumed erroneously it was PH5A like mine with a scale plate held on by 2 x screws - my apologies
