Looking at the photo original size, I can see the "M" now. Serial prefix letters seem to be "BS"

To see original size, I clicked on picture in post. When this opened in new window, then bottom RH corner clicked on zoom icon (next to BUY green box), select original size this gives a very nice enlargement.
Gearheads love to find items like that to bring back - epecially if its not locked up. I would have it in a tank of evaporust without its wood (about $30 per gallon) and let the enzymes eat the oxide away leaving any original finish and then release all the parts for inspection etc..would love to see "after" pics
I agree, don't waste your time on a sporterized rifle with a useless bore. So check the bore first before worrying about looks. Some very, very, thorough cleaning is required.Quote:

There's something amiss with the front sight anywayzzz, it looks like a No1 Mk3 front sight, is the barrel uncut?
We used to see big old Savage shotguns and No4's/5's like that. Not as bad maybe but they'd had a hard life in the constant rain and humidity especially if they'd been on the East side, in the mangrove areas. But they'd be stripped and sent through the workshop plant and come out in perfect condition. A bit pitted of course but now corrosion free for the next year or so. As has been said earlier. Providing that the barrel isn't a sewer pipe and passes the gauge limits - or accuracy test, it'll continue to give good service.
