Odd stripes on bolt, what caused this?

I've not seen this carbine in person yet, I hope to see it tonight or tomorrow. I think what you are seeing is grease as the seller has told me that there is not damage, just dirt. As soon as I can meet up with the guy I'll post a few additional photos.

The bright lines are the highlights from the machining, as in Bill's example. The "flats" are the brownish bits - covered in hardened grease. Maybe this is a rifle put into long-term storage and never cleaned up properly since?

I ended up purchasing this carbine. It's not what I thought it was as the barrel is import marked but the price ended up lower than I thought. I'll keep it and play with it for a while, it will be my shooter.
Regarding the bolt it's exactly as Jim noted (Thanks Jim!!!) it's the machine marks on the bolt. Overall it's not in bad shape, we will have some fun trying to wear it out!!
