Yeah, I've looked all over it for any signs of SCW, even under the buttplate. Doesn't seem to be any. Only marks on the wood is a stylized 'A' with a crown over it. Same mark is on the buttplate along with '17'.

I don't think it was used in the Spanish Civil War. During WW2 the Germans had complete units armed with G98's like yours.

1916 Amberg g98m. "K" dated barrel and rear sight - 1934
Nice!
I have 3-5 Gew98's all out of Spain. Most of the nice ones seen today have a Spanish connection. I know there are WWI vet bring-backs about, but this one is not a WWI bring-back. Likely out of Spain 1960/61.
definitely not a bring back. It's import marked. 'CAI GERMANY'.

Mine is, that is.
I have a Weimar rework GEW 98 but it was left as original and just refinished. I imported several original GEW 98 rifles in the 90's that had come to England via Turkey. They weren't very pretty but they were sound and sold like hot cakes at very reasonable prices.
Mine also has the 1920 property mark on the receiver

"CAI GERMANY" is not a Spanish re-work. Hard to tell where it came from. Nice find. I have 2-3 of the Turkey Gew's. Nice, but bores show lots of wear.
The stock on the amberg is a 98/22 stock. It has the slots for the handguard clip.
