There is some great info on that linked thread. Thanks for posting! In summary, it indicates that my rifle was probably issued to the German Bundesministerium der Verteidigung (Federal Ministry of Defense) The inside of the mark is BMVldg with 187 underneath. It's interesting that the stamp in the linked thread has "186" so I'm wondering if there is a significance to the variance. I'm pretty sure that I read on barvarianm1carbines.com (BTW, thanks to the author of that site for all the research you've done) that the BMV did not stamp or otherwise mark their M1 carbines. So it appears that there is a good chance that my rifle served in the US military, the German BMV, and the Detroit PD.Quote:

I did have a question about your rifle. It seems like yours is marked DPD 5 12. Mine is marked DPD 4 42. The response by DPD3672 indicates that for your rifle was either 12th Precinct 5th gun or 5th Precinct 12th gun. I counted the number of precincts on the precinct map and saw 14. That would seem to indicate that my rifle was probably from 4th Precinct and was the 42nd firearm. The pictures from your post are no longer available. Would you be willing and able to attach the pictures here? It's kind of cool to be able to pinpoint where the rifle was actually located in Detroit using the precinct map. My rifle has an odd buttplate that doesn't look USGI. What does your buttplate look like? Is the recoil plate blued and unmarked?

There is a picture at German M1 carbine Accessories that shows the stamp is from the Bundesministerium der Verteidigung (German Federal Ministry of Defense). Is it possible that the Dutch produced an M2 stock, buttplate, and recoil plate and then marked it with the stamp to indicate it was for Germany? So it looks like perhaps these stocks were perhaps made as a unit and not just as individual pieces. Did the Dutch make replacement parts for post-war Germany?
There is also a note about the image of the stamp showing up in Fig 1287 of War Baby 3. Could someone with access to that book give the context surrounding the stamp?
Figure 1287 shows a closeup of the stamps in the sling well of a replacement German-made M2 walnut stock. The stock shown has the West German-NATO stock number and the acceptance mark of the West German Ministry of Defense (an eagle whose wings bracket the letters "BMVldg"). Thanks for the update! So it appears that my rifle is a repatriated "Bavarian" rebuild that made it's way to the Detroit Police Department probably via an importer before import stamps were required.
I'll have to look for pics tomorrow. Not sure what happened to them from there. The butt plate doesn't stick out in my memory. Believe it came with a magazine too. The seller had several and all were Inlands. He told me another dealer had been selling all Rock-olas. That's interesting info on the precincts.
