well i just happens to have an Underwood barrel dated 12-43 but why did you even mention that? I just posted the Underwood because of the odd R on the receiver (hope to find out what it means one day).
He was letting you know that the "R" is really a "B" code. The receiver made by Singer. A nice carbine to have.
These ranges are from a reference book.
Code Marking:.......Serial Number range.................. Made By:
B.........................2,630,000-2,655,000....................Singer Manufacturing
S.........................2,577,000-2,599,000....................United Shoe Machinery Company
T.........................2,355,000-2,400,000....................Intertype Corporation
W........................2,401,000-2,491,000....................Universal Winding Company

The B for Singer Manufacturing is pretty evident in its normal position on or near the flaming bomb. Are you saying that the upside down R looking thing is a actually another flawed B? It certainly looks like an upside down R to me if you follow the shape of the straight / leg. I'm just asking, not pointing out an error of any kind.
Jim, did you look at the picture? The B is there and very prominent on the flaming bomb where it should be. The R is the odd ball and in no way is a B or an attempt at a B but I have no idea what or why it is there.
Hi Jim, sorry for the confusion. I tried, but failed to say I was talking about the obvious B being it's normal place and appearance on a Singer receiver, but was asking if you thought the upside down R looking thing was B. It sounds like that's still up in the air though?
I don't recall ever seeing another letter on an Underwood receiver like the R or in that position. It could have been added anytime from before the receiver was finish to just before Mr. Cali201 received it.
Sorry for the confusion and I was guessing at a barrel date.
I've seen B code barrel dates a little bit over the map, but mainly 11-43 and 12-43. Brian mentioned the Underwood 10-49 barrels too as being on them. I know there are dates other than what I mentioned too.
