I seem to remember the William Castle Horror flics, "The Tingler" and "The 13 Ghosts" as being scary. I also remember my brothers and I crawling under the couch to watch "The Outer Limits" on TV hiding from our parents. They would find us quick enough as we screamed at the first alien with big eyes coming on the TV screen. Of course everything was in Black and White back then.

The Thing scared us to death, but when we showed it to our kids and their friends on movie night they laughed.

Yes we use to watch Doctor Who in the early 1970s on a small square wooden boxed black and white television of late 1950s vintage. It was an old set then and the picture quality very poor partly due to it being only 405 lines but it was all my parents could afford at the time and so was better than nothing. I remember my gran was the first member of the family to get a colour television in the mid 1970s and there was a massive improvement in picture quality and it in colour as well!!!
