P14 Rifle by ERA

I also have this incomplete P14 rifle by Winchester but it is slightly unusual in that it has scope mounts. I think that the stock is from a P17 but am not certain as it could be a WW2 replacement??? Sadly I don't have the scope and I don't know if the scope attachments were added during it's military life or by a civilian owner. I am told that the second scope mount is below the rear sight but have not looked yet to confirm. This is a U.K. de-activated rifle and eventually, time permitting, I hope to make the rifle complete again and am open to constructive suggestions on the best way forward. Perhaps if it is a P17 stock it would be better to find the correct P14 version stock??? I only have what is seen in the pictures and I have done nothing to it. Thanks for any information.

The S marking at the rear would suggest that the rifle was sold (from government to a civilean person). The "tested by Parker-Hale" suggests that it was sold via Parker-Hale. I therefore consider the mount to be of civilean origin.

I can't make out from the pictures the inside shape of the front scope base, whether it's shaped in a way that the locking claws in there would first be locked at the rear scope mount, or at the front. If there was no additional rear scope base which had been removed, it most probably would had been required to first lock the rear scope ring in the receiver (with a square shaped foot, moved from the left to the right into the receiver?), then moved downwards and locked in the front scope base in the same manner as the SS Double Claw mount for the K98k rifle.

The modifications done to the rear receiver (would need a comparison picture of how a regular rifle looks there, I don't have one at hand right now) to me however suggest that there was a rear scope base present, which had been removed.

It is still an interesting piece and I'd not recommend you to modify it, except to try and find a mount which could fit.

PS: the eagle head in the grip area and the long finger grooves suggest that the stock on your rifle is a M1917 stock, and not a P.14 stock.
