Here's a marking similar to Peter's that I saw on an M1 Carbine stock listed on eBay about 5 years ago. I believe I asked about it here on the forum, but never got an answer. - Bob
Thanks guys, this is really interesting.
Surely someone among the Carbine experts must have an idea what the AI (or IA) monogram stands for. Or at least knock down my idea that it was indeed Inland Division. Were they still handling carbines in 1962?

I'm looking for clues about the barrel marking on the Bavarian site right now.
If anyone will recognize this marking it would be Jim.

AI is a makers stamp found on the wide Type II bands and the later Type III bayonet bands, a USA marking.Quote:

The mark in question might be a Hebrew alphabet character but I have not seen it on any Israeli imports.
Okay, I looked at it again and its definitely A over I, not any kind of non-English letter. I don't know what it represents unless its a rebuild facility in some country that uses the same lettering we do. Pretty good puzzle!
The second date appears to be a foreign reproof date. That is definitely an SA barrel. Interestingly, I can find no references to the superimposed AI marking. I wonder if it could be Israeli Armaments??? (NOT IAI)
