That was a USAF C7 Caribou that turned out on departure from - as memory serves - Lia Khe AAF and right over an artillery battery starting its fire mission. I think that was 1967 or 68.

Yes...still very sad and unnecessary. Another friendly fire issue that can't be resolved. No matter how many years in prison or how many demotions...the men are still in the bag. I always hated that.
Accident description - The C-7 (62-4161) Caribou transport plane was approaching the special forces camp at Duc Pho when it flew into line of fire from a U.S. Army 155mm howitzer. The tail section separated and the airplane fell down.
