This is how an original stamp should look. This is from my collection. I do not know how the damage occurred.

FrankieD,
Have a metal detector?
I had a NPM stock with the under forearm destroyed and also wondered how?
Son mentioned my detector to me, after knocking the barrel band spring out, we had 'Hits' on the damaged/splintered area. After some digging around we found some small distorted metal frags. Never thought to get pictures. Stock became a wood patch donor stock.
Your damage looks very similar.
Cheers,

Jim and Charlie, I always thought it might be shrapnel. It had to be high velocity to make that hole. It just does not look like it could be from dropping or bouncing around. I'll have to try the metal detector on it and see what it finds.
Best Regards.....Frank
Thinking back, we also found a few pieces of small frags in the side of the hand guard also. IIRC looked to be like steel splatter, like from welding or torch cutting.
Am 100% positive it had suffered from an unfriendly, be it man or mine... etc. But the inexspensive detector picked it right up
Could also have been a bullet ricochet, travelling sideways at that point...and yes, they hustle along...
Makes me wonder what happened to the guy carrying it.
