Gil, I emailed to your work email address.
anyway there appear to be 2 previous decisions which I haven't found yet.
Seems that Patchett consistently lost in court, and pretty much all modern intellectual property law (I've found case references in UK, Canada & USA) which finds that employees "employed to invent" have their inventions (and other intellectual property) owned by the employer seem to refer to them.
The main sticking points seem to have been that Patchett was paid a salary and a bonus or royalty, but wanted to continue to own the rights & retroactively renegotiate the rights ownership (and royalties) with Sterling (and other potential manufacturers).
The judgements seem to have been that he surrendered his actual ownership rights by taking the money from Sterling. Of course their several previous contracts and agreements re-inforced that.
According to some....., not me you understand....., and with the aid of a tenacious patent writer/attorney, he forever seemed to be wishing to invent and patent the laws of physics.
..........................and as we all know that ain't going to happen
