Well I've avoided "scope eye" so far and it doesn't seem to be a problem shooting prone, good solid position. However I do have the original eye shade installed on my Mk 1 scope and it's got me thinking, I may get a pal to film a shot or two and see what's happening with the rifle under recoil to see what the clearance to eyebrow is at the point of extreme rearward travel.
I guess there must have been a few old boys after the war walking around with nice scars over their eyes. It wouldn't have taken long before word went round to loose the eye shades I'm sure.
I will admit to smacking myself on the nose with my thumb when shooting a Martini Henry for the first time, that makes your bloody eyes water! Wont be doing that again.
Yep, seconded for Martini thumb/nose smack!
Mine was a fist shoot with a Martini Carbine, caught me out, snappy old beast. You soon learn though...
