Where I cam from, the government liked to stay out of your business until you did something wrong. As such, you weren't required to keep your vehicle in any particular shape to drive. You did, however, need to keep your vehicle in working order if you were involved in an accident. If you were involved in an accident and your car wasn't in working order, you'd be cited. True.Quote:

Matter of fact, here in Victoria we no longer have inspections. We had gov't sanctioned inspections in a Gov't site that turned out to be a cash cow for them...and went the way of the Do-do...new cars were failing. Huge outcry. Now it's the ambulance barn. Vancouver has an air quality inspection when you licence from out of province, proper thing too. I was involved in the scam in the east coast, New Brunswick that had you getting an inspection for things but so many vehicles were in sh*thouse shape you knew that was a scam. Guys would take your money and hand you a sticker. Then they'd eventually get their ticket lifted. Cars still drive around consumed by road salt and get their inspections OK...Quote:

For most yes, but when the road clearing products that are used for 8 months of the year are consuming your vehicle in 4 years...you can't beat it. My truck is now 8 years old and is fine...and I put long hard miles on it.Quote:

Here in Pennsylvania it's a annual mechanical and emissions inspection. Wouldn't you know everybody needs wiper blades at the very least every year. And until a year or so ago it was an annual registration fee, now we can pay for a two year registration, that's progress you know!!

Here in NZ all vehicles have to pass a Warrant of Fitness inspection every 12 months (vehicles made prior to 2000 are every 6 months). This check covers all mechanical issues, steering, brakes, seat belts, glass, doors, body and chassis corrosion, tyres, wheel bearings, etc. The cost is about NZ$50. There are fines for not complying and insurance is invalid with no WOF. Even with a current WOF vehicles can be instantly ordered off the road if found to be unsafe.
Here It's salt. Car washes are packed after a snow storm. Even if your vehicle has undercoating in 4 or 5 years it's rusty underneath. Some spray used motor oil on the chassis every year to fend off the rust. I did it with a Jeep Wrangler I had for 16 years and I had no rust. That's an accomplishment with a Jeep!Quote:
