My son enjoys hunting but is not overly interested in the collecting side. One of my grandsons is pretty keen and has a few of my books now. He is just starting high school this year so we will see how his firearms interest develops in competition with girls!
That is a beauty, just as it would have been when sold off post-WWI. The finish is remarkably good for a scope that was probably fitted up in 1916 or early 1917. One might wonder where it spent the war. I have never seen a number where that pantograph-engraved "7" is on top of the tube, but it obviously meant something!Quote:

I could be wrong (all the time if you ask my wife) but if you're referring to a '7' on the scope tube just behind the range drum, I wonder if it might be a broad arrow, but with one 'arm' of the arrow obscured by the angle of the photograph & or reflected light?

The '7' on the tube behind the elevation dial is an engraved Broad Arrow. The bases are colour case-hardened but most of the colour has worn off now. The screw threads are 4BA. The cylindrical front base is sweated onto the barrel (sights needed to be removed and replaced) and the rear base is sweated and screwed. I had to remove the scope and mounts from the rifle when I received it as the rifle was incorrect (an old MLE sporterised for deer culling, the scope was probably fitted to it in the 1930's).Quote:
