I have used a Wagner wall paper steamer with the wand removed to raise dents that wouldn't quite lift with an iron. I never went as far as to adapt a air hose fitting to concentrate the steam to a really small spot though.

A wet course cotton terry towel placed over a dented area (with no torn wood fibers) run over with a hot steam iorn has worked quite well for me.
