Even genuine No.4(T)'s may have undergone some factory repairs. A good example is a rifle that went through one of the W.R.S. (Weedon Repair Standard) sub-contractors. A rifle having undergone W.R.S. repairs may be identified by a six (6) pointed star stamped into the wood, with a letter stamped underneath it indicating the specific sub-contractor who did the work. For example, W.R.S. work to W.W. Greene was indicated by the six (6) pointed star and the letter V, which was their sub-contractor code letter.
That is the magic that keeps us going into the same old shops day after day. I love to see these stories, gives us hope!
Fantastic score! Love these type of stories.
This business of the six pointed star on No4 (T) butts has come up before. I know there was a scheme involving various prominent members of the gun trade in refurbishing rifles, but I'm not sure about these stars on 4T butts. I really don't have a 'pat' explanation, but I own a number of & have seen plenty of identical brand new old stock Sykes walnut butts kicking about. I think most if not all came out of Edna Parker's ten to fifteen years ago, & Greener's were also Birmingham based, so it's quite possible there may have been exchanges of bits & pieces between them. However, I think there remains the possibility that the star & or the V may have been used by Sykes themselves for some reason. The rifle in this thread has seen use (though is a peach) whereas most of the similarly marked butts that I've seen have never been on a rifle, which would tend to go against them being applied when a rifle was refurbished - unless Greener's marked a load in advance but then didn't use them, the butts ultimately ending up at Parker's. I s'pose that's quite possible.
Anybody have any bright ideas?
And your rifle was a steal!
wow! the closest I have come is I went in a pawn shop and found a pre model 10 2in. barrel S&W nickel with a round butt. I paid 300 bucks. they only made a few of them in 1940 I sold it to a collector who owned almost all of them in the country, for a whole lot more than 300 bucks! that is a nice find! one day I hope to have one,,,,,,,,,,,,,
