If you look carefully at the top of his rucksack he as two rifle grenades tied on for quick use - one at least looks like White Phrophrous (Wille Pete) - used for marking with smoke (and burning things). The chap with the M1 has a grenade tube on the top of his pack - likey extra ammo for the grenade launcher.
