What is that made of Birch? Looks like it. Those vary a bit due to contract, some have brass and some steel. Some have the metal painted and some blue or in the white...they made lots of various calibers too.

im thinking its Maple , lammed together , its from 1943 so it would have darkened over the years , the grain looks a bit tight for birch , it would make more sense that they would use maple for durability over birch , the grain on the cone shows like that because its the end grain cut exposed
I apparently never took photos of mine. I could swear I did including the case but I can't find them. The case is buried so I can't get at them easily either. I know I have three different types.
I have three of these, a little different in that the 'projectile' is all metal.
They used to be around and they made them for all the big gun calibers to facilitate handling drills. Last one I saw here was a 6Pdr 7Cwt with a long check from one end to the other, wanted over $300CDN. He still has it and is now out of business...
I guess it could be worse, there was one for sale in the UK a year back on MLU forum for £350. Then ship it here?
A Navy buddy gave me the spent casing from one of our 3" 70's and the Limbo ASW mortar from our Restigouche class DE's. I intended to replicate the projectiles these two cases launched for a display to commemorate the class since they were all being de-commissioned but a busy family life took up all my time back then.
Restigouche class Destroyer , im Mi'gmaq , my reserve in Quebec was called the Restigouche Indian Reserve for the longest time , its right on the St Charles river which was named the Restigouche river , i wasnt raised on the Rez , i was raised in the states , i never knew there was a Restigouche class destroyer
The Limbo was just a blank type casing with a charge but no projectile. I have one here...also a 3"50 complete, but missed a 3"70 complete. When you decide to make your projectile let me know and I can provide pics and measurements. The two had a near identical projectile.
The 7 ships of the Restigouche class were all named after Canadian rivers and they served the Royal Canadian Navy for 40 years. Most of them underwent DELEX (Destroyer Life Extension) programs and were very capable ships by the end of their service careers. The Restigouche was the first Canadian navy vessel to make official visits to Israel and Saudi Arabia and you can still visit her if you know how to scuba dive as she was sunk off the coast of Acapulco, Mexico in 2001 as an artificial reef.
