I used Skidmores leather cream twice and store it in my safe. Ron replaced the tail end once, and since then I used it once since then. It split on the smooth side by the butt end sling swivel and that's where it split with no pressure..... the sling is loosly attached.

Any sling will eventually crack, typically the darker the color the more likely it is. The darker colors dry out the leather more. We treat ours with our military leather dressing to keep them from cracking as long as possible.

From the picture that honestly looks like a chrome tanned leather. The way it is tanned and dyed is going to make the sling do that no matter how it is cared for. Unfortunately there isn’t much that can be done to save it other than using Picard’s leather conditioner, and even with that it will continue to deteriorate.
