In carpentry when you drive a nail at an angle it's called "toe nailing". When I was a green horn I was sent to the lumber yard to get a box of toe nails amongst the standard lumber list. I would be lying if I said I haven't sent a few young ones on a toe nail run:)

Yes remember the YTS and there was also the YOP Youth Opportunities Programme that lasted to about 1984
Not that many 4 year apprenticeships these days, we had to do 4 years plus at college, a year at the training centre learning the basic hand skills which included 3 months of hacksawing & filing, then you were allowed to use a shaping machine, as well as college we had to pass all the EITB modules.
In my year we had 120 apprentices which went down to 2 or 3 by the late 80s. We still take on a prentices (85 this year) but this is a loose scheme to what we knew as apprenticeships as it includes all areas including finance & various type of management roles. Our apprenticeships mainly last 2 years and most of the training is all vocational and very little based on gaining the practical skills and common sense leant the hard way.
That "tiger strip" has been on ebay for quite a while I think. Its great when dorks like this put such things up, tells me they are un-trustworthy and their goods should be avoided.
