That first photo of yours sits on my wall signed by Charles Lindberg who commanded the section who put the original flag up on Mount Sarubachi. He was "pi**ed" off because he had to raise it again for the Cameramen who missed the original lift, and names of those raising it were confused forever.
He died the year after he signed it for me 2007.
Did he tell you something about that battle?
Each time I read about similar situations I ask myself lots of questions and don't know if I must be glad for having been spared such a time, or sad that I never really got to know who I really am in this life of mine...
I guess that such an experience really tells you who you are.
My Grand Uncle (is that correct? The brother of my Grandpa) used to tell a story of a friend of his, a very calm and measured guy who, unlike him (who was sent to Yugoslavia and fought an utterly dirty guerrilla war - he was disgusted by humankind after that), served in Russia. Not with the Alpini (the mountain troops, who fought all the way out of the Russian encirclement drawing Italian infantry, German, Rumanian and Hungarian troops in utter disarray, mostly stragglers, with them), but with the main infantry units, who were forced to retreat without any means of transport (we had no gasoline in the front line or in the immediate rear) and without food and communication.
When he faced difficult situations or, worse than that, bad people, he always repeated: "I made it out of Russia by foot. They don't know who they're dealing with." And always got things the way he decided.
That guy knew who he was!
