No, they were always that. The only difference was the '87 with the full length mag. I did make a custom once, used a Numrich barrel blank at 30" mod choke and threaded it up. I used a cap from something that gave me enough thread and used a Mossberg mag tube for the front. Screwed the whole thing together and had a ten shot solid frame Ithaca 37. Problem was, it went through ammo so fast, about 100 rds in 15 minutes...so I sold it.
