Back home now! I'd endorse what Brian says too, although I'd estimate the standardization of markings to have occurred during 1943, as rifles dated this year are to be found with just about all of the permutations of markings (or lack thereof), but by the time we get to the later 43 rifles (say, around the AV & AX prefix range) the markings are generally getting to be what we expect on 'typical' BSA/H&H rifles. Conversely, 1941 & 1942 dated rifles are almost invariably of the 'inconsistently marked' early type.
Just my take on it, from what I've seen & owned over the years.
In thread #12, I pointed out that the finish "T" marking was applied to the right side of the body. Colin Stevens has pointed out my brain fart in a PM and it should read, "left side of the body". Of course, many rifles built at BSA/H&H that were completed, tested and sent out to the units didn't have the finish "T" applied at all to add to the confusion.

Yep, never seen a genuine 4T dated 1942 other than a Savage.......
Has somebody out there got a 42 dated BSA or Maltby, or even a Faz?? I don't know enough about LB 4T's to know if they exist dated prior to 43 - that's the earliest I've ever heard of.....

Wow, excellent thread and thank you all so much. On another note, does anyone know where I might find an original Kingscrew Sling swivel or maybe a good reproduction?
The correct military short swivels are around 50 bucks each. I see them at the local shows with a guy who has the rare parts, such as cut-offs and various other small but pricy bits..

Allen I notice that the draw on your Scout scope is still blued. Is that a minty scope with the original blue? I have one a minty one still having the original bluing also. The bluing on most draws are generally worn off from use. RayQuote:
