By 1944, the rifle would usually have been built & rebuilt using beech furniture and features such as later pattern cocking piece - if not a No4 cocking piece and striker. I'd have expected to see a beech No4 butt on this type of rifle, instead of the walnut NO type. I expect its done the rounds since 1944, and has had several parts replaced.

Thunder, the cocking piece and bolt appear to be original, unless the cocking piece has been replaced? Is the butt stock not original to the 1944 Dispersal rebuild?

Green paint ... well spotted Sherlock ! though if the gun has been paint stripped so thoroughly , why leave a splodge on the butt ? Is the butt an original type , seems to have a No4 plate unless I'm mistaken .
If ZF becomes common knowledge then I guess dealers will be scrubbing them off . Maybe it stands for Zimbabwe Fusiliers ??? :lol:

I've already seen a No4 for sale attributed to the "Zuider Force"...apparently a top secret Dutch resistance unit funded and supplied by the British during The Big One. :thup:

If it were mine, it'd be a club. The only indisputable fact here is that you have a big "ZF" painted on the butt of that poor ol' girl, and the meaning of that mark is pretty unambiguous. Without proper inspection/guaging by a qualified and properly equipped armo(u)rer, anything else is pure speculation.

Evidenatlly this didnt begin its life as a rifle with cut off..so what was it in its first birth?

I thought all BSA 1930's production were MkIII* with cut-off , though I may well be wrong . I suspect yours is a "bitza" , perhaps a WWI unused action built up and issued for WWII . That's my threepenniworth and it's pure speculation .

Maybe a old SSA or NRF MkIII* receiver, hence the need to scrub the original Royal cypher.
