"The slide sleeve cap apparently had some strange, sloppy work on it and I wonder if anyone can shed some light on what and why-"
It's damaged. Not sure how or why. I'd buy a replacement. You can probably find one on eBay for $20.

I found it very curious and surprising but will try to find another as well as a replacement mag spring...
Before I order another magazine spring - do know if the trench gun spring and tube are same length as the commercial guns??
The military guns were made from civilian guns so I’m sure the springs and tubes are the same length.
Is the magazine spring and tube the same length for commercial and military trench guns? Been looking for a replacement spring with surprisingly little luck. I did find a replacement stainless spring made by Wolf but before I order I want to be sure....I'm leaning more to converting this 12 to a trench gun I think.
Is this 12 Ga "New Factory Original, Vintage" spring OK to use ....? The eBay seller laid it out sorta straight after a request.
I need a replacement....
I shortened my M12 trench magazine in order to get rid of the takedown pin holes. I honestly don’t know how the real trench guns were done. Guessing they would pull the mag tubes from the line before drilling any holes and fit the endcap with the bayonet mount pin. Any 12 ga magazine spring should work. I wouldn’t buy one thats already kinked up, get a new ss one and trim it.
