Another Easter Gun Show Is Done!
Hi. Alot of you have met me over the years and I can only say it,s been a pleasure. Barry and I have been managing the Calgary Gun Shows for the past 4 years and the next Easter Show will be our last show. We hope that a responsible team of individuals will step forward to carry on the tradition that has brought Alberta the best gun shows for the last 49 years. Its sad to hear some of the negative comments...but do they ever offer any comments of how to improve the gun shows? No!!!!! But on the positive side I,ve had the pleasure of meeting a lot of great people and I,ve been made a better person for having the oportunity of meeting them! Thanks, keep your ammo dry. Jack
Howdy and looking to get learned up!
hey guys, im new on here. i recently got kinda heavy and dove into the Milsurp stuff headfirst. im kinda an addictive type of person so when i take an interest in something i wanna know the ins and outs of everything from every angle and soak up everything i can.
my kid brother is a walking ballistic chart. we are both ranch raised and guns are an everyday thing. seriously...seems like 23 hours a day theres one in my back pocket, in the truck, leaned against the dining room table at suppertime etc. typical texans right? haha.
so before he joined me in active duty with the 1st Cav, he worked at our ranch community gunsmith/taxidermy shop. a few years back while working there he picked up an M44 mosin from a fellow that has been dropped into an ATI synthetic stock, sights hacked, etc...
he dropped it off at the house a while back. i never liked the modern tactical/synthetic stocks/ red dot/laser etc etc etc... always a cowboy shooter fan and deer/varmint setup fan. WOOD STOCKS. so i figured i needed to make that poor old Mosin carbine at least a bit classy and am always looking for a chance to play "garage gunsmith"...
degreased EVERYTHING/boiled the small parts... hundreds of cleanings in its past im sure- and the first time i field stripped it down i STILL found cosmolene residue in the bolt assembly and breech. Re-blued the barrel. Krylon-ed the stock. added swivel sling studs... but couldnt bring myself to tap the reciever for a scope... plus i didnt want to swap the bolt out for a swept handle for the scope clearance. $20 dollar sporter to experiment on, but knowing its age and NOT knowing its history it just felt sacrilege. so i did some homework.
Its a Import marked (ATI - explained the synthetic stock!!!!) 1946 Izhevsk re-arsenaled M44. all numbers matching on the REMAINING parts... REMEMBER this was sporterized... i also learned that few M44s saw combat due to production dates, etc.
that research is what kinda sparked the mil-surp flame. that was 4 weeks ago.
i now own a 1926 Tula arsenal Hex barreled 91/30 that is all numbers matching, including bayonet, and in beautiful shape. hardwood stocks, not laminate.
i also am the proud owner of a 1917 Carl Gustaf swedish mauser... in GREAT shape... and with NO import marks which i thought was really frickin neat. ----- i have questions about this one so help me out when i post over in the mauser forum!!!!!
And yes... that butchered M44 is still hanging out in the cabinet... i want to return it to its intended state..and am going to piece it back together as i find parts online... im not concerned with matching numbers, etc... i just really want to reverse the shame someone before my brother and i subjected it too. haha!
so anyways, thats how i became a surplus rifle junkie... but i still have tons of questions and look forward to shooting the breeze with yall out there to learn more!
Vaya Con Dios!!!
