If we're going there Amsdorf I can't agree either - It's no offensive weapon like a Garand, but it's much more effective than any hand gun which is what it was designed to replace. It did so well in the position of being better than a 1911A1 people started using them as offensive weapons. The carbines had more power than a hand gun and were much more accurate, so their hits were effective.
The carbine was an overachiever - It did too well in the job it was designed for. Then many people wanted to carry them into battle as their primary rifle. They were light, handy, ancurate, and had firepower with 20 round mags. They issued them to many paratroops after they found they worked fairly well as an offensive little battle riffle.
