It's the examiner's mark on the right side of the bolt raceway. But it's an earlier rifle, so if Roger Payne thinks it's OK, then no worries!

I could be wrong, but I think you have a real 4T that has been gutted in the past & then rather inexpertly (I'm being polite here) rebuilt.

But that's just MHO & it would be interesting to see how others see it. If I can help with tidying it up then drop me a line with your needs.

Thanks Roger, could it not be an Armourers rebuild? No I'm clutching at straws. anyway the woodworks too new, and it has some nasty rings on the side where someone has put a sander over it or something :)
